Yeah after Dr.Mike had to

Yeah after Dr.Mike had to haul us off several times after heat stroke making those crop circles we started wearing green cotton alien suits
and then we could make much nicer crop circles down undah

and it gave me extra free time to upgrade 3 of my computers to Windows 10 so they would behave and do their Boinc crunching

I dug a little deeper and found this for those thinking of just doing a 'new' install of Win10 as opposed to an 'in place upgrade' and using their Win7 or 8 numbers to do it:

"Digging further into the player’s FAO page, Microsoft states only upgraders from Windows 7 or Windows 8 will get it free and users who perform clean installations of Windows 10 will not. Furthermore if users ever need to reinstall Windows 10 (for example, due to problems) then Microsoft doesn’t count that as coming from Windows 7 or Windows 8 and again you lose free access to Windows DVD Player unless you first install Windows 7 or Windows 8 then upgrade to Windows 10."

It seems backups are becoming even more critical now than ever unless you want a long involved process. And MS has NOT said upgrading after the one year is up, due to a crash etc, will still be free.

Hmm. It seems awfully quiet

Hmm. It seems awfully quiet on the i-net for such a spectacular release of a "mostly" FREE OS. It is because it is going well or are most taking a wait and see attitude. I am beginning to feel that uSoft is about to wrap me around the axle. Too many "i before e(s) except as in neighbor and weigh" rules seem to be surfacing. If your giving your OS to me FREE because I am a licensed/registered user then do it without all of these "rules/exceptions/conditions". Happily I have only one Windows box and I might not make the effort.

For those considering Win 10,

For those considering Win 10, have a read first of this Seti thread.

Win 10

There pages of it that are quite negative ....

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

Why do doctors have to practice?
You'd think they'd have got it right by now

Win 10

THAT is the last thing I will do.

After 15 years of those discussions it always ends up the same.......linux.....mac.....wfh.....

JUST DO IT

I have done many, many OS installs over the years and this is the easiest ever.

EVERYTHING still works and I didn't have to do any tricks to make my files, documents, pictures,or programs move with me to Windows 10

Booted right up and back to work they went.

If it wasn't for those long goofy threads about Microsoft on Boinc pages I would never hear or see that happen.

Sure I could get this supposed magical and free linux.......I don't want to.

So I have 3 of my 6 hosts converted and will do the 8,1 next and then my last Win7......then I will wait until next Spring to change my XP Pro to Win7 so then I can change it to Windows 10

And no I don't see Bill Gates or the NSA looking at my emails......because they aren't.

Might be part of why I quit Seti back in 2005 .....other than the waste of time thing

I bought a used dual quad core Xeon machine, 16 cpu cores when using HT, and loaded 64bit Win7 Ultimate and then Win10 Pro on it yesterday and it went like a dream!! No problems what so ever, my Win7 always works anyway, but this is the first Win10 machine, other than the one I have been running since the very beginning of the betas, that I have upgraded. Boinc is up and running with no problems and 15 of the cpu cores are happily crunching Boinc units. I WILL definitely do it again to my other machines!!

That being said this only works as an upgrade, not as a fresh install, any fresh installs of Win10 will require you to purchase a Win10 code, your Win7 or Win8 codes ONLY work as an upgrade. So if you want a fresh install of Win10 you MUST buy a Win10 code to do it.

I did an image backup when my Win7 install was complete and will now do another image backup of the Win10 install, just so I don't have to go thru this whole process again if anything crashes.

caveat emptor: after 30 days you can Kiss your win 7 ultimate licence GOODBYE as it will no longer be valid.
In other words you will NOT be able to revert back to win 7 after 30 days.
The win 7 ultimate license is transferred to the Win 10 license.

caveat emptor #2 If your win 7 was a 'Retail' copy that you could install - re-install at will ...your brand spankin new FREE FREE FREE win 10 is equivalent to an OEM copy which is limited to the lifetime of ONE machine.

OH .. I guess Satya Nadella forgot to mention these small details.

I did not know about #1, but #2 is not a problem.
Thanks!

Thanks for this info. This was/is why I felt uSoft is wrapping me around the axle. It is a oneshot upgrade and if your hardware fails it seems that you have no other options then to purchase a Win10 copy. An ISO image tied to an install encryption key would be a true free upgrade without the need to worry about "timelimits" or failed hardware. An ISO "option" would defintely be a clean free package.

So here is the important question for me. How long will Win7 be supported/continue?
