It bounced off a few buildings right after 9 regenerated into 10.

(I still think it's cheating not to give War Doctor a number.)

I need to spend some time studying the rules and the app, to see how useful it really is for planning flights. What's especially frustrating is all the overlapping 5-mile radii. If I want to fly over the museum, I potentially need to contact six different airports. That's somewhat ridiculous. I predict the drone users organizations are going to start lobbying for a few common sense modifications to the rules.

Taking a look at where IRM is located, it looks to my eye that all those 6 airports are "Private" airports. This is good for you as pilots need prior permission to use them. No control towers and not very many flights except for the glider port. Other than the glider port the phone number might not even have more than an answering machine on it.

As a once in a while thing just make a phone call a day or two in advance, say you will be flying at the IRM (give Lat/Lon and radius as well) below X feet between hours such and such, who you are, your drone registration number, and a call back number. You have made your notification. Just write down the time and number you called. The airport is not required to say okay if I'm reading the regs correctly. [That is an oversight BTW]

If you want to do it on a frequent basis, the water is going to get muddy. If IRM wants to use your footage, it will be considered commercial use. Then a different set of rules applies and I believe you need airport and FAA permission in advance.

Finally to add to the MUD you might want to have a chat with the IRM as they may have to add operation of a drone to their liability insurance. After all if something bad happens and a guest is injured, you aren't a paying tourist flying a personal drone, you are a volunteer/employee so they get sued in addition to you.

Now you are beginning to see all the stuff a pilot is responsible for.

Sounds good to me (as a drone user). Sounds stupid to me (as a potential passenger in a plane or helicopter).

That's something else I've wondered about. If I simply post the video to Youtube and set it to "monetize," does that constitute commercial use? Commercial use involves more than just the flight regs.

Hmm, didn't quite think of that. I did think far enough that I would either fly when we're not open or on a very slow day, at least over the grounds. Other people have flown down at Seeman Road, a popular spot for photography of our trains in action, and I thought I would give that a try too.

One day when I was there, just before sunset, a balloon came along, flying right over Barn 9, and landed in the flat area next to our parking lot. Don't they have to ask permission before landing on private property?

[Edit] after watching the video all the way to the end I salute their effort but looking at the design of a dual rotor mount I am not sure about their safety "argument". Simply stated if those are fixed pitch blades then I do not see how they could effect an auto rotation. Helicopters must be able to auto rotate to effect a successful landing. This requires changing blade pitch while building inertia in the rotor system and using it to "break your fall close the the ground". I am assuming their power supply is battery. If the battery fails what now?

Now I will contradict my above statement by stating that gyro planes can effect safe engine off recoveries without changing blade pitch. Hmm? Maybe they can effect a safe landing.

My foot is finally feeling a teeny bit less bad than it was, and my hip's on-again, off-again pain is off again. However, the right side of my back is worse today. I may have to take it for an x-ray if this keeps up. (That'll use up my high deductible pretty quick, I suppose.)

Actually no, but they are responsible for any damage. Out your way I'd expect that to be mostly the farmer loosing a few dollars of crops from being flattened.

I think the regs say that anything but recreational is commercial use. IIRC there have been photographers who have gotten in trouble for using the drone as a camera platform. Like taking photos of a house for sale or a happy couple at a wedding. So I'm sure monetize on youtube would be commercial use. So would the IRM having a link from their site to your youtube videos, because of your relationship with them.
