I will definitely leave my G5 on the max setting from now on. I didn't think it made that much of a difference. I guess I was wrong about that.

I had mine on “Automatic for the first few months I had it, until I discovered that it was generating huge numbers of errors in system.log:

(time) (computer name) kernel [0]: PowerMac11_2_SlewCtrlLoop::setVoltageSlewIndex - slew request timed out every few seconds, day in, day out, having filled about ten .gzip log archives by the time I noticed. These messages stopped when I switched to “Maximum.

Hmm. This app seems to run

Hmm. This app seems to run ~9% SLOWER on my G4 (1.25ghz iBook).

http://einsteinathome.org/host/770490/tasks

4.03 = 96,975.73 sec
4.29 = 105,410.10 sec

The WU vary quite dramatically, but in a predictable way, in their runtime.

Mike Hewson et al have developed a good mathematical model and a nice tool to actually predict these variations, see this thread.

Using Mike's tool, it can be shown that the latest result (105 k sec) happens to be for almost the slowest WU possible, while the 4.03 result (97 k sec) should be among the fastest possible. Therefore it's quite possible (even likely) that 4.29 is actually faster than 4.03 for comparable WUs on your PC.

So maybe you want to continue using the new app a bit longer.

Are these data from this Host enough for the mathmodel/tool you mentioned?

WU with 4.03: h1_0798.05_S5R2__143_S5R3a / 93,802.05 sec / 237.83 cr
WU with 4.29: h1_0788.45_S5R2__109_S5R3a / 81,070.51 sec / 237.40 cr
WU with 4.29: h1_0897.50_S5R3__488_S5R3b / 88,734.26 sec / 237.15 cr

Unfortunately the 4.03 WU is already deleted from the server.

Is there a real speedup with the new app?

Might there be another power

Message 78476 in response to message 78475

Might there be another power app, crafted to get the best from a G5, or is App 4.29 the best we can hope for in the foreseeable future? Thanks.

Well, I'm actually a bit behind with development on the PPC front. There's still room for improvement, but I currently don't know when I'll come to it in the next weeks.

After shutting down BOINC,

After shutting down BOINC, copying the three files to the einstein.phys.uwm.edu directory, and restarting BOINC, I get this error:

"BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly; please reinstall BOINC. (Error code -1202)"

Removing the three files from the directory and restarting BOINC fixes the problem. I've also seen this happen on a G5 when trying to install optimized SETI but was not able to solve that either.

Has anyone seen this happen or know how to correct? Thanks in advance.

Nevermind - found the answer

Nevermind - found the answer here. Changing the owner and group of the files as specified appears to have fixed the problem.
