It currently looks like S5R4 will be in place next week.

We'll probably have a short downtime for the server upgrade, we don't know yet if we'll do this both in one rush at the same time.

BM

Sounds like a plan! :-)

Either way, thanks to MW, all my troubleshooting tools are dusted off and I'm loaded for bear no matter what comes along! ;-)

From the Einstein home page:

From the Einstein home page: "Users of Beta- and Power-Apps should be aware that they will not get tasks of the upcoming S5R4 run with these S5R3 Apps."

So what should we do? Run the power app until we don't get any more S5R3 tasks and then remove the app_info.xml file?

Thanks

Hi! It depends on your

Hi!

It depends on your priorities:

* For the credit-aware crunchers who want to get as many credits per hour as possible: yes, keep the app_info.xml file as long as possible, remove it only when your hosts literally run out of work.

* If you are a modem user, are paying IP traffic by volume (no flat rate) or are otherwise concerned about high data traffic, remove the app_info.xml file when the new S5R4 run starts and the new apps can be downloaded automatically. Until then you might even consider suspending E@H temporarily if download traffic is getting too heavy for your taste. The transition to S5R4 will probably be announced here in the forum in the next week.

* If none of the above holds, do as you like :-). WUs from S5R3 should be around for at least another 2-4 weeks I guess (resents from PCs failing to meet the deadline or having errors etc).

The easy way is to remove app_info.xml next week when the start of S5R4 is announced.

One comment here for the

One comment here for the bandwidth impaired:

There is nothing which prevents you from using the anonymous platform for the stock app.

Thus if you want to run just the S5R4 work exclusively when it starts, you can create an app_info file defining the stock app as the target, and thus your host won't DL any of the cleanup work for S5R3 once you implement it.

Keep in mind you will need to NNT your host and run out the last of the S5R3 work you have onboard before doing this.

Is there a way to edit the app_info.xml file, so the old and the new app(S5R4) are used side by side?

I think about somethin like:

einstein_S5R3

[...stuff about the current apps...]

einstein_S5R4

einstein_S5R4_6.02_2_i686-pc-linux-gnu

einstein_S5R4_6.02_2_graphics_i686-pc-linux-gnu

einstein_S5R4
602
6.1.0

einstein_S5R4_6.02_2_i686-pc-linux-gnu

einstein_S5R4_6.02_2_graphics_i686-pc-linux-gnu
graphics_app

Looks good to me, but I'm not the app_info.xml guru here :-) Gary?

Things that probably will change are the file names you mentioned. Another thing is that these are switching apps again, so there will be *_0, *_1 and *_2 files that will have to have tags in the app_info.xml.

But Gary should be able to answer with more detail.

The

The 'einstein_S5R4_6.02_2_i686-pc-linux-gnu' app will probably be the SSE2 app, but I guess your right about the swiching app.
Anyway the app_info.xml-extensions have to get adopted for the windows users.

For the file names have a look at the download page. ;-)

Thanks again, Bikeman On

Thanks again, Bikeman

On reflection, my question itself probably gave away which option I would pick. I have been enjoying the increased RAC, and it benefits both me and the project to continue using the power app until S5R3 work runs out. Win-win, if you like.

and, a while ago, Gary Roberts said:

So what you could do as soon as the new run is "live" and the apps are available (but you are still crunching the old) is simply download copies of the new app files and place them in your E@H project directory, edit your copy of app_info.xml there, and then stop and restart BOINC. From that point on you are "new and old app ready" and will be announcing same to the server every time you contact.

And where is that, pray tell?

Aps list page linked from the home page lists current ap versions, but I don't know how a non-insider would find the download location for aps to which multiple posts in this thread refer.

If you look at the result details of a workunit, you will find e.g.:
2008-07-24 21:44:55.2835 [normal]: This program is published under the GNU General Public License, version 2
2008-07-24 21:44:55.2837 [normal]: For details see http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/license.php
2008-07-24 21:44:55.2837 [normal]: This Einstein@home App was built at: May 14 2008 11:45:00

If you follow the links and follow, and follow, you might end up at:

http://www.lsc-group.phys.uwm.edu/cgi-bin/cvs/viewcvs.cgi/einsteinathome/binaries/apps/?cvsroot=lscsoft

Who is the first/next building his own einstein app? :-))
