RE: Thanks for all the info

Thanks for all the info guys... will try the "fix" tonight when I get home from work.

As I said though... I am also having a similar problem with PrimeGrid WU's... so doubt it is an Einstein problem... more something to do with the interactions of Windows 7 x64 and BOINC.

In earlier messages you said it was only happening on the intel machine and not on the AMD. Has that now changed? You seem to be having to abort GW tasks on both machines.

But again... thanks! No more having to abort Enstein apps!! :-)

Well, we hope that is the case but seeing as you haven't actually tried the workaround, maybe you'd better not get too cocky in case you jinx yourself :-).

Your earlier report also mentioned 'orphaned conhost processes'. I must admit that I had no idea what you were talking about as I'd never heard the name before. When Gundolf also mentioned the same name I decided to google it and so it seems to me that it may be the key to the problem - some sort of bad interaction with the switcher app.

If you too can solve the problem by circumventing the switcher app, that should be pretty significant so a report from you will be eagerly awaited :-).

Cheers,
Gary.

Now it will be up to Bernd to work out why the use of the switcher app seems to cause the problems you experienced. Once he works that out and issues a correction, you should be able to do away with the use of app_info.xml.

I think the final solution would be to get rid of the 'switcher' completely and use the app_plan mechanism in the scheduler to deliver apps that match the CPU capabilities. First thing next year...

Ok, Brief update. I

Ok,

Brief update.

I have installe the xml file, will wait for an S5 app to load up, see what's happening.

Gary, you asked anoput the AMD machine... well, to be honest, I dont remember for sure, but think I have had to abort a few S5's off there too recently.

I do know for sure I have been having a similar problem with some of the apps from the PrimeGrid BOINC project, and definately on the AMD.

I might try and adapt your XML to try and enable the PrimeGrid apps too.

I only just put the fix in this morning... forgot the family had booked me in for Carols by Candlelight last night.... even if we did have another day of fire bans here in Australia and had to use electronic candle rather than real candles.

Ok, so as I said, will wait for an Einstein app or two to run and see what gives... will let you know, keep your fingers crossed.

You have a new one now. Here is your tasks list for the Xeon machine showing the new arrival at the top. It may not have started crunching yet but I guess it should shortly.

No need to trust your memory, just take a look for yourself :-). Looks like you've had to abort a few there too. It's not surprising because that machine is also running Win7 64 bit. It would sort of shoot a big hole in the theory if it weren't having a problem as well. That means if the workaround works on your Xeon you will need to do the same on the AMD. As you have no new tasks there at the moment, pretty soon would be the perfect time :-).

Should be easy enough to do if you know the project name and the names of all .exe files involved in that project. However I'd wait until you see it working for E@H before going any further.

I'm from Brisvegas and we've already had an early foretaste of this year's fire season. Unless the heavens open soon Brissie is going to be tinder dry this year.

Cheers,
Gary.

Woo Hoo!! Einstein S5's

Woo Hoo!!

Einstein S5's now run!!! Thanks guys, much appreciated.

I did have a go at setting up the same fix for PrimeGrid... but I was in a hurry as I went out the door, and I screwed it up somehow. Anyway, now I am settled down in front of all my gear again and I will fix it up properly... if I can work it out.

As for BrisVegas... Sorry Gary... didn't realise you were working under a handicap! ;-) hee hee...

The last few days I didn't

The last few days I didn't recieve any 'ABP1'- Wu's .
Do I have to adjust the 'app_info.xml'? Because on 15.01.2010 there was installed a new 'ABP1'-application.

Please tell me what I have to change in the 'app_info.xml'-file.
At the moment it is as Gary suggested.

THX in advance

ABP1 is finished - we are running ABP2 now.

The switcher app for Windows is finished. You need to get the new S5R6 app which is right for your machine. This will happen automatically if you allow it.

Your best bet is to set NNT and to allow tasks on hand to complete and return. You could speed that up by aborting any tasks that haven't started at all if you wish so that you only need to wait for currently crunching tasks. When you have nothing left, delete app_info.xml, restart BOINC and reset the project. You will then download the latest apps for S5R6 and ABP2 automatically.

Cheers,
Gary.

Oki I set 'Einstein' to NNT

Oki I set 'Einstein' to NNT (No New Tasks). I have still 6 S5R6-WU's to crunch. Then I delete the 'app_info.xml' and restart BOINC, then I reset 'Einstein' and 'allow new work'...

THX for all the advices

OK, I'm back on the 'normal

OK, I'm back on the 'normal track' (without 'app_info.xml').
All went so far so good, except after resetting and restart an error message told me that it was missing the 'einstein-apps'. Then I allowed the Einstein-Project to get new work, and all what was necessary was downloaded.

It is working now as it should...
...so happy crunching ^^
