New radio pulsar discovered in Arecibo data

Congratulations to our volunteers James Drews, UW-Madison and juergenstoetzel. Their computers have discovered a new radio pulsar J1859+03, in data from the Arecibo Observatory PALFA survey.

Drews works at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and is the ninth-ranked Einstein@Home volunteer, measured by total computing credits. This is his second pulsar discovery!

Further details about these and other Einstein@Home pulsar discoveries can be found on this web page, and will be published in due course.

New radio pulsar discovered in Arecibo data

Congratulations one and all ! :-) :-)

[ And if I'm reading the data sheets correctly, that was a fairly subtle discovery too ie. a credit to the full phase model that E@H searches upon ? ]

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Hi Mike,

your right about the subtle discovery, it is a relatively faint signal. But it is not a pulsar in a very compact binary system (which would've required our full phase model). What makes it difficult to find is that there is radio frequency interference (RFI) from man-made sources (airport radar, electronics, etc.) at very similar frequencies like the pulsars. We've seen in the past a couple of times that with our processing we can find signals even in pretty bad RFI environments. And this discovery is just another proof :-)

Cheers,
Benjamin

Thanks for that detail Ben.

Thanks for that detail Ben. That's an awesome find. E@H just rocks ! :-)

Hallo!
At first also my congratulations.
If I´m right, the crunching has been finished in Jul 2010. Does this mean, these results has been reviewed just now, 3.5 year later? And can be expected to find in this results even more new pulsars? Would be really nice. How much of the whole amount of results have n´t been reviewed now?

Kind regards and happy crunching

It was probably more a question of getting telescope time to examine the candidate spooted by E@H in the real world.
