I have been running v.7.2.42 on Windows 7 Enterprise machine (Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+) for a while now and updated to 7.4.36 when it first came out. After install and startup, I got the following message: "BOINC Manager is not able to start a BOINC client. Please launch the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services applet and start the BOINC service." When I browse to the Services applet, however, BOINC is not listed. At the time I just uninstalled 7.4.36 and re-installed the old version hoping things would be fixed later. I just attempted to re-install to no avail. Advice?

Are you using the Boinc defaults when you install or are you making some changes? Are you trying to do a 'service' install? Are you trying to install Boinc with 'vbox'? Did you choose the 64 bit version to try and install?

I use the defaults, I'm not doing a service install, I did include virtualbox, and I did download the 64 bit. I just did an uninstall and re-install using the BOINC software and I'm getting the same message.

Upon trying to re-install 7.2.42 I am now getting a message "Error 1324. The path IONE??? contains an invalid character" and then the install wizard fails.

You will probably need to use Regedit to clean up the path name(s) in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup

or simply delete the whole 'BOINC setup' registry key and start fresh - do check the settings carefully, and make sure they suit your environment, as you go through the re-install after that.

I ended up going through the re-install process for 7.4.36 and when it asked for the program directory I found there were several Chinese characters in the last folder of the directory listing which I deleted and then everything worked fine.
