Topic 191062

While yes, maybe a stupid question, it is interesting to consider non the less. I've heard of guys running operating systems such as linux on their PS2's and Xbox's, so I was wondering if one might be able to run BOINC as well. All of the necessary hardware is there (getting it to contact the server might be tricky), and it might be cheaper to buy a used Xbox then a PII.
If anyone has any thoughts on this, I've got an xbox that I'm willing to sacrifice in the name of science (or insanity).

There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers. - Richard Feynman

Can my Xbox crunch for Einstein?

Have a look over at the Seti boards, and search with the keyword xbox. The topic have bin discussed a couple of times over there. I don’t know if someone have tried the Albert application on the xbox, but there are people that is running seti on it.

Then you're really interested in a subject, there is no way to avoid it. You have to read the Manual.

Looks like the xbox only has

Looks like the xbox only has 64mb of RAM and the ps2 with 32 is even worse. So while linux may run, BOINC needs more RAM. It sounds like the 360 and eventually the ps3 will actually do a pretty good job at crunching WUs, but since I don't have one it looks like I'll have to stick with my PCs.

Dang, guess I'll have to

Dang, guess I'll have to scratch my old Dell PII/200MHz's, (64MB max RAM).

The PS3's FPU is non IEEE754

The PS3's FPU is non IEEE754 compliant. Keeping the last digits precise is technically difficult, sacrificing precision and accuracy allowed them to boost the throughput significantly. Unfortunately while anything past the 3rd or 4th decimal is almost irrelvant for gaming purposes scientific computing requires accuracy out to the full length of the number. It may be possible to get acceptable results on them without wasting too much time doing extra work to preserve otherwise lost decimals, or it may not. Until the 1st one gets hacked and has linux installed we won;t know.

It doesn't have to be hacked. It is going to launch with linux on it. In 32-bit mode it is not IEEE754 compliant, but in 64-bit it is. But there still is no x86_64 client at Einstein, so we wouldn't be able to use it. In 64-bit mode it has an estimated 25-30GFlops, that sounds pretty worth while to me.

Not all projects require 64megs to run. Take a look at some of the other projects, there are around 30 of them. The new seti app that will be used soon, aka enhanced seti, will only need 32megs. There are others using similar sytems to yours on the beta site.

What convinced MS to release the new xbox with support for The Anti-Christ(tm) out of the box?

I assume he was referring to the PS3, not the XBox 360.
