all my work units crash - please help

I can't seem to complete a work unit. They all crash after a few minutes, and I don't know what I can do to fix it. The results on the web page show the following messages:

That look like either a permission problem or a out of diskspace problem to me, probably the first.
Are you sure that the account that BOINC is running under has write permission to the sub folder projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ under the BOINC installaion forlder?

No - Windows 98 used FAT32 only, and the extended security descriptors are only available in NTFS.

I would have guessed the same as Bikeman - you have a permissions problem - until Jord pointed out (in his own inimitable style :-). ) that it can't be permissions because you are running Windows 98. So it looks like Bikeman's second guess is the go now.
The crux of the error message is
2008-05-05 19:19:08.7500 [CRITICAL]: ERROR: Couldn't unzip '../../projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/skygrid_0990Hz_S5R3.dat'The skygrid file is a data file that is zipped up to save space. When the science application starts, it has to unzip that data file and store the contents in the folder where crunching is going to take place. If it doesn't have the necessary permission or if there isn't enough spare disk space, it wont be able to expand the contents of the zip archive. Because you are using Win98 it isn't a permission problem. It seems likely that BOINC thinks you don't have enough disk space or that there is something wrong with your disk drive.
You need to answer the following questions :-
* How much free space is currently in that partition?
* Have you recently installed other programs or stored any large files in that same partition?
* Have you recently changed any preferences on the website?
* What are your Disk and Memory preference settings on the website? Go to your account page and look under general preferences. Tell us all 7 values you find under disk & memory settings.
* When was the last time you did a surface scan to check the integrity of your disk?

I am running Windows XP

I am running Windows XP Professional, version 5.1. I just recently installed Service Pack 3, but the problem I am having was going on long before that. On my hard drive, I have 28.10 GB free space, 173.42 MB used by Boinc. Besides Einstein, I have Rosetta@home and Seti@home. Both of them are currently running OK.
This is what I have in my preferences for Disk and memory usage for Einstein@home.
Use at most: 2 GB disk space
Leave at least: 1 GB disk space free
Use at most: 50% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every: 180 seconds
Use at most: 75% of page file (swap space)
Use at most: 50% of memory when computer is in use
Use at most: 90% of memory when computer is not in use
I have not installed any large programs recently. I last ran a disk scan a few months ago, but the problem I have been having with EInstein predates it. I'm going to run another one just in case.
I hope there is something in this information that can point to a solution.

Something weird then. Do you run BOINC in Windows 98 compatibility mode?
I ask as the computer with all the crashing tasks shows as having Windows 98.
I just checked all the other projects you're attached to and everywhere it says you are using Windows 98.

I have no idea why it shows me as running Windows 98. I have been running windows XP for several years. I looked at the Options and Preferences, and I didn't see anything that would make it think I was running WIndows 98.
I just installed the most recent version of Boinc about two days ago, and I don't recall seeing anything that would let me install it in WIndows 98 compatibility. Anyway, is there anything I can do to correct this?

OK, navigate to your BOINC

OK, navigate to your BOINC directory please, then right click on boinc.exe, properties, compatibility. is Windows 98 compatibility mode enabled here?
If it is, uncheck the compatibility mode option, Apply and OK.
Now open BOINC Manager, Advanced view, Projects tab, select Einstein and click Update. Let's see what that does.
It's possible this already fixes your other problem. If it doesn't, go to one directory above your BOINC directory, then right click on the BOINC directory, properties, Security. Are you in the list of people allowed to read and write to this directory and its sub-directories? If you aren't, set yourself to allow all.

I just did it. I won't know whether it worked until later today, because Einstein has me limited to one work unit per day right now. Will post again when I see what happens to the next unit.
