Message 85048 - Posted 27 Jun 2008 14:50:34 UTC

A few days ago I the following appeared on all of my projects:

"Message from server: Incomplete request received."

They stopped uploading completed tasks and are not receiving new ones.

I Googled the phrase and found that virtually every Project message board had a post or series of posts regarding this going back years.

All sorts of people try and assist with suggestions ranging from detaching and reattaching to Projects, repairing BOINC, uninstalling and re-installing BOINC, even editing various XML files in the BOINC folder.

Nothing seems to work and in each case the thread simply stops as if the person has given up.

The BOINC WIKI has an explanation of the message but no advice as to resolve it.

Has anyone had success in fixing this?

I don't want to drop out of BOINC and the Projects I am involved in. That said there is no point of continuing if I can't obtain WU and submit those I have completed.

Thanks in advance.

Most of these problems are with proxies and firewalls blocking the complete outgoing and incoming data. So make absolutely sure you are using the correct proxy settings in BOINC, when you use a proxy. Also make sure you are allowing BOINC through your firewall software.

What is happening is this: BOINC sends a request to the scheduler, it doesn't get the whole request in and sends you back that message. In 95% of the cases it's something local, firewall, proxy, network card, network cable, modem, drivers, bandwidth. The other 5% is project/server problems, but not if you have trouble at all projects you are attached to, then it's definitely something local.

Thanks Jord.

No changes had been made to my equipment when the problem arose. I have checked all the settings as a result of your reply and have even taken the firewall down. The problem persists.

I see you have service pack 3. I've read unconfirmed reports that this adds to Windows the disability to have programs in the \\Program Files\\ directory that (constantly) write to disk.

So did you install BOINC in the default directory, or did you make your own?
Would you be willing to see if the newest BOINC 6 (still in testing but really close now to be released to the public) fixes things? This version of BOINC will split the data directory from the BOINC directory.

If you want to try it out, download it from this link (direct download).
You can follow the installation steps in this FAQ. It will auto-migrate everything from your present BOINC directory to the separate directories.

Apropos, did you check that system on viruses and spyware lately?

Jord,

I have full virus and spy ware installed and running.

I've had SP3 installed since it came out last month. BOINC was installed after SP3.

I will try version 6. Thanks for the offer and the FAQ. I'll let you know how it goes.

Regards,

Tom

Continuously? I ask as there have been reports of BOINC not playing nice with active scans of AV/AS software. Always, if you have the possibility, exclude the BOINC/BOINC Data directory from the active scans.

On the other hand, this gives different problems, as the software locks parts of BOINC. Usually write errors and such, not networking errors, which you have. So yeah, try out BOINC 6 first. I'll stay around if you run into trouble.

Gents,

I have upgraded to BOINC V6 and have separate directories for the app and its data. I have added all the BOINC applications to the trusted lists in my firewall, anti-virus and spyware programs. I am connected directly to my LAN rather than using the wi-fi connection.

The problem persists.

Thanks,

Tom

...even editing various XML files in the BOINC folder.
...

Did you try cc_config.xml? I could solve a similar problem by switching from htt protocol version 1.1 to version 1.0.

To do so, you must create a text file named cc_config.xml in your BOINC directory (if it doesn't exist already). Since I'm still working with rev 5.10.45, I don't know whether it has to be in the program- or the data directory. With notepad or a similar editor, enter (copy&paste) the following into that file:
<cc_config>
<options>
<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
</options>
</cc_config>
There are no lower case 'L' characters in that code, only digits '1'. More information to cc_config you can find here.
In BOINC Manager (Advanced view) select menu 'Advanced->Read config file' to activate the new configuration.
Hope that helps.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Gundolf and Jord,

I've created the cc_config.xml file as suggested in the data directory and read it using the manager.

The problem continues.

I think I will uninstall BOINC and start all over again...

BTW Gundolf, good luck against Spain.

Thanks for the help.

The way your computer contacts the schedulers has changed from using method POST to method GET. BOINC uses POST to contact the schedulers, the schedulers get a GET result from you, which is usually used by a browser.

So something did change on your computer, if it worked before and now out of the blue it doesn't. I'll ask one of the BOINC developers what could make this change and get back at you.

Is there something I can do to change it back to POST?

I wonder if this is the root of the problem which has also affected others?

If I was to uninstall BOINC, remove all trace of previous files and folders and clean the registry and then reinstall would that clear it? I would rather not as almost all of my Projects have completed their WU's.

Would using BAM have caused the change from POST to GET? The problem started about the time I added BAM as an Account Manager. I have since removed the service.

You can backup the BOINC Data directory, then uninstall BOINC and delete everything, also clean out the registry. Then put the backup back and reinstall BOINC while pointing to the data directory.

But I don't think this will fix it. I haven't heard back from the developers yet, then again, it's weekend.

I also don't think BAM has anything to do with it. That doesn't change the way BOINC contacts schedulers.

By the way, how did you disable BAM? As as far as I know, when you detach from BAM, it will detach you from all the projects you are attached to, thereby losing all work that's ready to report.

There was a selection under the Advanced Tab to Discontinue Using BAM.

OK, edit the cc_config.xml file (you made it for the HTTP 1.0 option) so it looks like this:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<http_debug>1</http_debug>
<http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>

save it in your BOINC Data directory. Restart BOINC. Make contact with a couple of projects and post the messages from it here in this window. Alternatively, you can email me the log, if you don't want to give out your IP address to everyone around here (as that may show in the messages). I'll PM you my email address.

With thanks.

Jord,

Are we (you) going to post the solution to the problem now that your hard work with David's assistance has me up and working again?

Yup. I wrote the FAQ on it. :-)

In short, this problem is caused by a corruption of the global_prefs.xml file. Exit BOINC, delete the file, restart BOINC and contact your projects and you'll be up and running.

The full how to is in the FAQ.

With thanks for your patience, Tom.
