I came home after work today and found a Mercedes looking symbol on my E@H screen saver and am wondering what this is? Any help?

Hmmmm .... that would be 'Mercedes' as in the car maker? So that's a three way/pointed star within a circle?

Cheers, Mike.

Exactly, gray circle, with 3

Exactly, gray circle, with 3 black lines that meet in the middle, trisecting the circle, with a smaller circle in the very center, kind of like crosshairs in a rifle scope.

For GW search the sky position relevant to a given WU is indicated by a crosshair like marker - but with quadrants ( 4-way ) aligned with celestial co-ordinate directions. Now I personally haven't activated the screen saver for quite a while ( crunch faster without it, and not with CUDA's anyway ), so I'll check with another machine at home. Maybe it's been altered ....

Cheers, Mike.

Just curious, would there be considerable speed up in performance if the graphics app is disabled entirely...?

I know SETI@home optimised app removed the graphics app for screensaver, but I didn't know why they would do that other than performance-related issue.

Yup, the fewer threads ( of anything ) the more time/slices to the apps. As for considerable, well that depends on the overall performance of your machine - # of cores, BOINC core allocation(s), to name a few parameters. I mean the screensaver is pretty for sure and simple feedback to us on the apps, but I personally don't use any type of screensavers - just powersave the screen to off after a given time via the OS.

Cheers, Mike.

Maybe Mercedes has figured

Maybe Mercedes has figured out how to slip ads into Boinc ?

Actually, I don’t use the screensaver either but, I think what Omega
is describing only shows up when you are running an ABP2 task.

Not sure.

Do you think it looks a bit like this?

Well done! :-)

An Aricebo icon to indicate the sky search position for an ABP WU ....

Cheers, Mike
