Public lecture at MIT about Einstein@Home

Ah, there's a key one ( my emphasis ):

Quote:
For sociologists, we'll talk about why people volunteer their computers for projects like this (there are about 100 such projects world-wide). What motivates the volunteers? Why did some of them stick with the project for years, even though it didn't find anything?

DownUnda, we would call that the Collingwood Factor ( footy supporter ). Or even worse, The Saints ..... :-) :-)

Seriously, it'll be something like that, technical detail aside. I think we all have to some degree a type of 'team socket' inside us. But you have to find the right plug or motivator. The iconic Einstein name is a biggee for E@H, well it is for me. Pleasant tinkering would be number two. Learning, socialising world-wide, hobby-like distraction ... the list goes on. [ But the main thing is not to take it all too seriously, as online things can tend to be for some. ]

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

... and my other CPU is a Ryzen 5950X :-) Blaise Pascal

Was the speech recorded

Was the speech recorded anywhere? I couldn't find anything like PIRSA for MIT, but my Google-fu is pretty weak.

I think the socializing is an important one! If a project has lots of work but no one can interact with anyone people may crunch but they get excited and enthusiastic about the project, unless it gives sooo many credits that people will just crunch for that. Seti itself had a wonderful set of message boards for a very long time, then went thru a difficult time period where the Forum Admins kind of were in charge and made their own decisions and the System Admins let them. Hopefully things are better now, but I left during that difficult time period and won't go back.

Some projects, like Seti, also tweak our human interest as in 'are we alone'. Some projects, like Einstein, tweak our scientific interest in bigger things. In short I too would like to see his talk and see how he feels about how we got to where we are and where we are going.

I'm sorry, as far as I know, the talk was not recorded or filmed. But I am thinking of recording a series of short video lectures about Einstein@Home, to make available on the Einstein@Home web site and on YouTube. Would you be interested?

Cheers,
Bruce

Yup, that would be great! I reckon contributors, potential as well as actual, would welcome first hand accounts from the founder and boss of the project. :-)

Cheers, Mike.

Great idea.
I think Itunes U would also be a good distribution channel perhaps.

iTunesU is pretty good, but only for people with iTunes. If you do this, please also make them available to people outside of Apple's walled garden. Thanks!
