Thanks for the info Bernd. So I shouldnt expect to see anything other than CPU type 1 for now!

I was interested in logging the CPU type to the messages tab just so that users could tell if the CPU detection on their paticular system was functioning correctly. But I suppose that anyone who would know/care what the CPU type is would probably know to find that info in sterr.txt. So I guess it would be overkill (especially if it would be awkward to code).....

thanks again!

Paul.

Is there any info available on what should be detected as the CPU type?

For example "CPU Type 1" does not mean a whole lot to me, but I guess from this thread that it means the app has detected an SSE capable CPU.

Should an SSE2 capable CPU report a different type?

In the future, it you use SSE3 or any other CPU instruction sets, do we know what type should be expected?

I guess I am asking if it would be possible to get a list of what CPUs / Instruction Sets come under each of the CPU Type 'umbrellas' as reported in the result.

cheers,

Paul.

ps... a little request! In future versions, would it be possible for the CPU type to also be output to the BOINC log at start / restart of the work unit?

It shouldn't make much of a difference in performance. as you said - it loads very quickly anyway... thats my take on it anyway!

thing is, if you leave it in memory you will (obviously) use memory that would otherwise be free for your operating system. If you PC is low on memory, as in the case of Elealiu, then you could end up using your virtual memory (page file) alot more and this will slow down everything on your PC.

No unfortunatley not.

Einstein WUs take longer to do than SETI. It's not your computer - thats just the way it is!

BOINC will use port 80 by default. This is in the docs somehwere... not sure where! (I'm sure you will find it here at - Paul D. Buck's FAQ )

Anyhow your best bet is to configure your firewall to allow BOINC to access all site (web pages) on port 80.

HOw exactly you go about doing this is totally dependant on what firewall you are using...

When you say package I presume you are talking about a Work Unit?

AFAIK Each WU can only be processed on a single CPU... or at least only on 1 CPU at any one time. What you will find though is that while you are using Hyperthreading, your PC will crunch 2 WU simutaneously; both in about 10 hours. This will give you a throughput of 2 WUs every 10 hours....

Same is tru if you used a true multiprocessor machine. Each processor would get one WU so you would have lots of WUs running at once.

Are you running BOINC on the same machine you posted this message from? If so, it sounds like BOINC can't connect to the internet..

Have you a firewall installed? Has it been configured to allow access to the net from BOINC (it will use port 80)

Paul.

ARe you getting alot of Paging activity on the box? ie is the Hard disk on the machine very active?

you don't have alot of memory on that box (for running XP anyway) so you may be running into trouble with swap space.

Are your projects left in memeory when pre-empted? (general prefernces?) if yes, try setting it to no and updating. Also what is your 'switch applications evere xx mintes' set to?

note: I have obsereved that after you change your preferences, you may need to leave it a while before you update BOINC. They seem to take a while to filter through to the scheduler. (or whatever server it is that sends preferences to the client!!)
