Your personal background.
Once upon a time I was a reactor operator on a submarine. Breeding neutrons was very interesting at times... boring at others; quite the mental exercise to paint a picture in the mind then see the results in the instrumentation. After that I helped assemble the Hubble Space Telescope and enjoyed the opportunity to launch and verify it's initial operation on orbit. That too was literally a mental exercise, affecting the unseen and untouched. It's taken me years to realize what a travesty the program management was, but I'm still proud of how the "Old Girl" came around to take her place in history.

I first heard rumblings about LIGO... oh, I suppose it was about the same time that the Super Conducting Super Collider was dying on the vine. I am very pleased that LIGO made it to fruition. This is a wonderful project from the standpoint of utilizing CPU capacity that otherwise would be wasted. It's extremely gratifying for me to see that thousands of people around the world are not only aware, but are actively interested. And it gives me another exercise in the contemplation of gravity waves.
