Your personal background.
I am a 58 year old former nuclear engineer and computer guru. Currently, I am disabled and mostly housebound. Helping out by supporting BOINC projects makes me feel that I am contributing something worthwhile. I know that I can't compete with some of the big boys who have many, many PCs at their disposal, but I do what I can. Both my desktop and laptop run 24/7 in support of BOINC, with work & network set to RUN ALWAYS.
My immediate goal is to try to accumulate at least 1,000 credits in as many projects as possible. I know that for a lot of participants, that is not even one days worth of credit, but I'll just keep on plugging away as long as any projects are available.
My thanks to all projects which have allowed me to participate, and to all of my fellow volunteers who view this as a good thing.
