| Your personal background. |
My name is J. Karl Miller (I use Karl). I'm of the the "senior" set (white hair) and have been a member of SETI@home since 1999 and recently joined EINSTEIN@home. My professional interests lie in electronics and computers, my hobbies are astronomy (it's been an interest of mine since I was about 8 years old), travel, and a layman's interest in various other sciences. I'm a past president of the Vancouver centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), and a former treasurer at the "national" level. I'm also a member of the Applied Science Technologists of British Columbia (ASTTBC), and have been active on its council in the past (treasurer, etc.) As technologies have evolved, the borders between my professional activities and my hobbies have blurred (if they ever existed in the first place). I've always had fun doing my work - many times I feel that I'm being paid for my hobbies (although I still have to pay for travelling).
SETI@home and EINSTEIN@home appeal to my sense of being involved in the advancement of science and our understanding of "our place in the universe", albeit in a small way. They also have a direct connection to astronomy; they are an extension of the visual and photographic aspects of that science, which are my areas of interest.
Perhaps, one day, we'll know whether we are alone in the universe - by participating in the "@home" activities I think that I'm helping to find out. |
