| Your personal background. |
I live in North Carolina, on the east coast of the United States. I'm 51 years old. I might be considered a "jack of all trades", since I have been a professional automotive mechanic, electronic repair technician, and machinist, plus I have also been involved in many aspects of textile manufacturing, from narrow fabric weaving to supervisory and plant maintenance positions.
I am a licensed radio amateur (ham radio operator) callsign KF4DCF, a certified scuba diver, and I also enjoy camping and fishing, and until a short while ago (when someone broke into my house and stole my telescope) I was an avid amateur astronomer. Even now I love to get outside even on the coldest nights to watch meteor showers.
I also enjoy working with computers. I love taking old unwanted computers and giving them new life. |

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be in on the cutting edge of this new technology. As I mentioned in my bio above, I am an electronics technician and a ham radio operator, so I've been seriously considering building a radio telescope to try to get into something besides the visual observations. However without millions of dollars (which I definitely don't have) I would be very very lucky indeed to be able to make a true "discovery", however with this project I now have a possibility to participate in a really new discovery. Even though I may not be in the group that actually "discovers" something new, at least now I would be able to say "hey, my computer was used to help in doing the research that made this discovery".
When this project (or one like it) does actually detect gravity waves it will be the most important advancement to science in general and astronomy in particular since the advent of the first radio telescope. It will open up a whole new dimension in astronomy, allowing a view of the universe that has never before been seen. |
