Your personal background.
name: marc
interest: all space and scientific stuff, making shure it's scientific and nothing "spiritual" like 'seti at home' , horoscopes and such stuff.

Why seti@home makes less sense to me, but einstein at home does ?!

Well theres a theory of let me call it "the intergalactic zoo". We are in it.
It is is very likely that we are the first "inhabitants" in this galactic "zoo" thus sensing others is nearly impossible.

The more we loock out for other Planet-Earth's it becomes clear to us, we're very special - maybe unique in our own galaxy.

Why?
Our solar System is really very special:

1) Our Solar system itself lays inside the habitable Zone of our "Milky-Way" Galaxy, and the Zone did provide our system with enough carbon and Oxide and so on to build up solid planets which made the invention of carvon live possible ( galactic fountain theory )

2) Earth lays in the habitable Zone of our Solar-system and styas there for several billion jears

3) The Solar-System has very little / less dust in it, - which is the exception, and means in the past another star did pass it nearby taking out dust BUT did not corrupt planetary orbits
(planets could fall into the sun - bad for life )
while removing a fair amount of dust (+ little and big rocks ) from the system

3b) otherwhise the earth might be a gas planet too.
3c) or there where 200 times as much impacts as ww had in the past!
Guess what? - bad for life.

4) it's unique planetary setup,>> Big Planets protect us from impacts,
- remember the 64 million jears ago impact killing nerly any dinosaur life on earth )

5) We've got a BIG moon which stabilizes the earth's rotational axis, and provies us a very well tide, Good for live in the ocean )

6) Earth has alot of free liquid warm water enriched with minerals and molecules ( very good for life )

7) Eath did develope a nice athmosphere shielding oureselfs from dangerous Space and solar radiation, Ultra-Violet light and harder radiation,
making live on land possible,

8) Earth has it's on magnetic(-dynamo) fild which shields us from heavy space particles which otherwise will sterilise earth and it would become another Mars desert Planet. Tectonics depend also on this dynamo!

9) Earth athmosphere can produce it's _own_ magnetic field shilding us against solar UV, when i's dynamo turns "OFF" ( North / South Pole flip)
- by high altitude athmospheric ionisation, causing a plasma which provides us with a magnetic shield against solar particles withihn just a few hours!
( we see this on other planets like Venus - this works for Eath as well - lucky bastards we are eh ? ;-)

10) our system did not pass any Supernova in the past nor was one nearby our solar system and we don't head towards one in the "near" future, No Xray or Gamma Ray's toasing life on Earth :)

And don't forget 42 's the sum of all theories ;-)
Your's Marc
Your opinions about Einstein@Home
1) To push forward: applied science and engeneering skills
2) Great future potential for far object detection.
Actual(may2006), experiments are too poor and icky to detect any extraterrestrial objects ;-)
3) Well time will come where such detektors will work as intended and maybe in the near future the actual 3-sattelite spac-interferometer for gravitational wave detection will lead us to the first working gravity-wave-teleskope.
