Purdue Alum - BS,1952, MS,1958, Ph.D.,1961 Since SETI has been so flakey since converting to BOINC I thought I might as well help look for gravity waves although, even if we don\\'t find them, they must exist since Einstein was rarely wrong. I have two cabinets with three bootable HD\\'s each that can be selected by a Trios switch at startup. They run either Win 2000 Pro or Win XP and are more or less identical. This affords some protection from crashes (ave ~ 5 or 6 per day!) and viruses since a bad drive can be shut down and a good one selected and booted to continue operations. The bad drive can then be reformated and rebuilt from a good drive. One setup, this one at 3.0 ghz, is on cable so I have SETI, einstein, LHC, rosetta, Predictor, Leiden, and QMC on it. The other, an AMD 64 bit at 2.4 ghz, uses DSL and runs the Proteome and FightAids programs from the World Community Grid as well as the other 7 projects In my working days I could write programs in Fortran, Basic, Assembly language, and directly in machine language( for the Heath Robot HERO-1). | |
