| Your personal background. |
Since 1992 APREC Coastal Ecosystems, an environmental and educational NGO based in Niter贸i, state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), has been engaged in several important activities. One of them is the 鈥淣iter贸i Mangroves Project鈥? (targeted at mangrove recovery in nearby Guanabara bay). The organization and the project have become more widely known due to their achievements. A major grant was awarded to APREC in the September/2001, by Brazil鈥檚 National Environmental Fund (FNMA), under the heading 鈥淐limate Change鈥?. APREC鈥檚 ongoing 鈥淣iter贸i Mangroves Project鈥? jointly managed with IBAMA, Brazil鈥檚 top-level federal environmental agency, is supplying primary data to this new FNMA - supported project, which will allow the evaluation of carbon sequestration in mangroves. Two partners participate nowadays in this project: Center for Sustainable Development, University of Bras铆lia; and Vi莽osa Federal University.
The mangrove project鈥檚 goal is to generate technical-scientific knowledge and bases for the design of public policies and community actions, in order to achieve the recovery of degraded coastal ecosystems. The project was registered at BM&F Carbon Facility, a joint initiative between the Brazilian Future Stock Exchange of Goods (BM&F) and the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). The goal of this initiative is to promote the reduction of GHG emissions or their sequestration from the atmosphere and to generate carbon credits, in line with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol (UNFCCC) criteria.
APREC is affiliated to the Brazilian Society of Ecological Economics and to The Climate Observatory (NGO鈥檚 and social movements). The technical staff includes several scientists who hold M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees, in areas such as climate change, environmental law, environmental management, oceanography, ecology, systems analysis and natural resource economy. APREC, a non-profit and tax exempt NGO, was awarded Public Interest Certificates issued by the Municipal Government of Niter贸i, by the Rio de Janeiro House of Representative and by the Brazilian Federal Government, that facilitate contributions duty free. Besides, APREC麓s Federal Public Interest Certificate allow international donations to request tax exemption according Brazilian laws.
Therefore, on the fifteenth aniversary of foundation APREC wish to contact institutions interested in making investments in the activities linked to our NGO projects, in order to establish some kind of collaboration.
We would be glad to hear about your interest in this joint collaboration.
