1)Because the truth (or at least, the g-waves) is out there. :)
2)I read about Joe Weber's aluminum cylinders back when he was trying to invent gravitational astronomy. I think now that we have the techniques, the sensitivity, the processing power, and the funding, let's do it!
3)Let's rely on sensitivity, rather than close proximity, to detect the crash of decaying-orbit neutron star binaries. :)
