Profile: Stephen Duff

Your personal background.
I am a 52 year old former Chemical Engineer who has been disabled from exposure to lead based chemicals during the early years of my work in industry. I am currently going back to school to obtain my BS in Computer Science and then attempt to re-enter the work force in this new field.

My first wife died in October of 2000; however, I was blessed to find the most wonderful woman and I have since re-married. I now have a new, larger family, with two stepchildren in addition to the four children from my first marriage.

We love to travel; especially near water where my wife and I can Kayak near shore and just relax on the water. Fishing from a Kayak is a new experience for me but is a lot of fun.

I have obtained a new computer from our Vocational Rehabilitation department in our state. I decided to use all of the new processing power to contribute to the Seti@Home and Einstein@Home projects. The new computer is amazing regarding speed and I want to put it to good use when I am not working on my Computer Science courses. At some point I hope to contribute to writing code for the two projects.
Your opinions about Einstein@Home
I strongly believe that distributed processing, like that used in Einstein@Home and Seti@Home, is an excellent way to obtain extremely high powered processing. My only suggestion is that the servers for the project should be more reliable. I've only been signed on to the BOINC system for a few days, after using the classic Seti@Home system for years. It has been down more than it has been up since I joined. I hope these problems are short term.
