Profile: Mike Mars

Your personal background.
Hello, this is Mike from Bielefeld, a medium sized town in Germany, just between Hannover (GEO 600) and Dortmund, home of "world-famous Dr. Oetker" ...
I'm nearly 45 years old and working on my own business (computers / network-administration / it-training).

Naturally I spent a lot of time together with any kind of computers, but I don't really like them! Because, after all this time I am convinced, that we would be able to manage most of all projects without the "help" of a computer and that this would be less time-consuming at all. Additional I sometimes believe, that (in the scientific world, for example) more and more only those items were investigated, for which the computer is an ideal tool. A kind of self-fullfilling prophecy ?

What else? I'am sailing an old wood-made dinghy (Pirat) and observing the beauty of planets, stars, galaxies and nebulas with my telescope.

Nevertheless, there is my family and we are trying to communicate not only via SMS or email!

ciao Mike
Your opinions about Einstein@Home
Last year the GEO 600-experiment was discussed in the magazine "Sterne und Weltraum" and on the Cebit-fare in Hannover this spring I've found a stand in booth 9 occupied by the MPI of Potsdam. I've had a very pleasant discussion with the scientist at the stand and decided to switch from seti to einstein. For me, it seems to be less difficult to find the origins of gravitational waves than weak signals of some kind of civilization in the universe. Therefore I'm optimistic, that this new project will come to exciting results in the near future.

Bringing together the vast amount of computational power of thousands of bored pc's is perhaps one of these rare occasions, that this technology can help us understanding the world.
