| Your personal background. |
I'm from Santa Monica, Ca. originally, but have lived in the Silicon Valley the last 20 years. I've been programming for the past 35 ears, and I'm 53 years old now. You do the math!
I started with an IBM 1620 running FORTRAN II (NOT II-D - we had no disk or printer - you had to feed the punched cards with the comile, your source and object decks and your runtime library in order to do ANYTHING, which ciuld be done in machine language if you liked... The 1620 had 64KB of memory and the only machine with a variable length instruction set. If you worked it right, you could have ONE instruction run and execute in all 64K!)
I've done systems programming, system bring up, 20 years of diagnostics, 15 years of senior management, etc. I've built many beasts. Even hit the jeckpot with one - Finisar - that was the 10th largest IPO of the century.
I now work for Fidelity National Financial scanning tax docs for a paperless office solution project, and managing an office full of 'scan analysts.' This beats Real Estate, which I sold for the first couple of years after the tech bust, but is not the most exciting thing I've ever one.
My hobbies are raising tropical saltwater fish, photography, and fishing with my 8 kids and wife.

| Your opinions about Einstein@Home |
I started sharing my machine with SETI in 1999 - I had designed a similar system to use people's idle cycles back in 1980 while working at Xerox - and being on the very first internet. But I never implemented it myself.. I was going to PAY people for using their idle time. I guess donating our idle cycles is a good thing for a good cause as long as we're doing things to help mankind.. which I believe SETI and Einstein and several other projects are doing. So, I think it is great.
My only suggestion is for the coders that are writing these distributed programs to put out more tips on how to set up prgrams to run under shells like the BOINC manager. Let's do even MORE projects and get MORE people signed up. Maybe some could be done - shudder - for profit. |
