Profile: MrTortue

Your personal background.
My name is Albert William Demello, III, born September 25, the Year of Our Lord 1964. I have a wife (since 1991), and two children, a daughter and a son (in that order). We live in Brookline, New Hampshire. I am disabled. In February of 2000, I was hospitalized for complete paralysis of my right side. Within a week I was diagnosed with “Repeating Remitting M.S.” (Multiple Sclerosis). Before that I had been the “Manager of Computer Operations and Imaging” at a major direct mail facility (read: “the people who send you junk mail”). These days I am trying (though the doctors say I am a silly man), to relive an earlier ambition and dream of being a freelance programmer and remembering how to play the guitar and drums {for therapy ;-)}.

Repeating Remitting M.S, means it comes and goes (or at least mostly goes), and some day may likely become what they call “Secondary Progressive”. Currently I have most of the use but little of the feeling in my right side. I can walk short distances, ( like 15-30 feet depending on the day), but otherwise need a wheelchair. There are some other issues that make a regular “9 to 5” pretty much out of the question. The medical community considers me, for all intensive purposes, or at least as far a normal job goes, “Permanently and Totally Disabled”. I however am neither part of the medical community, nor well ...
normal”.

I am Currently trying to revive and sharpen my long to dormant programming skills. I love to program, I started out on an IBM mainframe playing with REXX,VM, and CMS (back in the early '80's we where one of the few shops that did not bother with MVS, we had REXX, VM and guts, LOL) and of course at school and home in BASIC, and PASCAL. Since I have moved on to C/C++, JAVA and a plethora of Internet oriented scripts and languages. I love the stuff, the way some people can read a romance or adventure novel, I read programing reference books. I guess that makes me a sick, sick man in more ways than one.
