Profile: Jim Martin

Your personal background.
1. Name: Jim Martin

2. Home-town: Bedford, MA

3. Age: 69

4. Retired computer engineer (HQA), mini-computers (to date myself)

5. "Double-dipping" w/USPS, to put two daughters, one son, through
college (I started late.)

6. Hobbies: My kids; also, biking, hiking, swimming, gardening,
and reading/writing poetry (no less); plan on writing p-&-p drivers
for an "obsolete" SONY mag. tape drive, which is no longer supported
(one of the sad aspects of rapidly-developing technology, but it does
provide fun challenges)

7. Distrib. net. computing participant: Approx. 2yrs. (SETI@home, up
to SETI-/Einstein- BOINC projects)

8. Opinions about Einstein@Home: It appears to be a very worth-while
endeavor, as well as SETI@home. Have not yet really gotten beyond
weeding out type-o's, firewall obstacles, etc., but look forward
to setting up both programs to run on their own -- so that I can
return to keeping up with my kids, via email!

One side-note: I worked on the NASA STADAN net (Fairbanks, Alaska),
during the early 70's, and enjoyed participating in taking data from
scientific satellites ("birds"), for the scientific community,
including some Apollo support. It has been a very gratifying feeling
to be back into the swing of things, even if only from the front of a
computer console!

Cheers, and good luck to us all!
