( edit ) ... and this from a guy who used to jump out of planes for a living ? Like that's easy, right? There is no way that you'd miss the planet. Your work's already done for you from the get go ... a lazy use of gravity if you ask me ! :-):-)

So as to not hijack the science thread, I'm continuing here.

@Mike - I not sure I would say the work is already done for the jumper, lol. I would describe gravity as a harsh task-master who will not be denied. Ask any paratrooper who has had a major 'chute malfunction (happened to me twice) how "weak" gravity is. After the initial thought of, "Oh crap, this is gonna hurt" goes thru your head you get busy figuring out how not to bounce.

Well, one out of two ain't bad. Hence the bad discs in my spine. The first time my 'chute re-inflated and I lazily (see above) floated to the ground. The second time it was about halfway full of air when the dang planet got in the way. So on that count, you are correct. I didn't miss. I just ended up with a few big ouchies.

On further reflection, after re-reading your response, I now claim to have a perfect record as a paratrooper. I jumped 54 times and hit the Earth every time, even though it is moving thru space at around 18 miles per second. Not bad, huh?

No one of these (1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme) had it since 1979

Gravity keeps it on the road so this Olds 455 Rocket will never fall out of the sky!

But it is 45 years old and will still go 140mph if it is a wide, straight, and smooth highway.......but at the price of gasoline I tend to go the speed limit on a sunny day.

Still wish I had my 1973 Cougar XR-7... But with today's gas prices in California, I couldn't afford to drive her. :-( 13 mpg on Super Unleaded... :-( 351 Cleveland 2bbl stock. :-) Fill up Monday, Wednesday, and Friday... :-(

Now I drive a 2009 Civic Hybrid. 1.3 L. Fill up twice a month with about 9.3+ Gallons of gas per fill up on Regular Unleaded. Still miss the Cougar, though.

Good afternoon everyone. :-)

I am trying to figure out what this jet is doing. Not landing with a 10 foot flame and a deck hand off to the right. Taking off? Front slats are extended. 10 foot flame. Positioned over the steam cat. Could be I suppose BUT with the canopy rolled back? I don't think so. Still pondering this question? What is he doing?

I think the idea is that if you have done N jumps then you would be fit for N+1, perhaps that's a better definition of success ! :-)

My flying instructor used to quote the old saw : a 'good' landing is one you walk away from. The other one I liked was : when the engine loses power the plane belongs to the insurance company, so focus on making a good landing ( ie. as above ). He had others : there are old pilots, bold pilots, but few old and bold pilots ( ie. don't do aerobatics under 10K feet, or alternatively just don't do aerobatics ). Also : there are three useless things in flying (a) the runway behind you (b) the airspace above you and (c) the fuel in that tank on the ground down there. Plus : it is better to be on the ground wanting to be in the air, rather than in the air wanting to be on the ground ( ie. stay on the ground in lousy weather ). His best one was very specific, 'if you get in one of these :

... I will smack you down'. It's an uncertified device, officially classed in the 'ultralight' category and thus escapes independent expert attention. Typically flown by 'air libertarians' who tend to buzz private properties for a lookie, and appear to think no-one will be beneath them when they crash. Mind you, no incident to date involving them has called upon acute medical or rescue services.

Speaking of buzzing : what's the go with all those little drones ? I see a big market opening up for anti-drone products. :-)

Now wandering around the SpaceX website with Elon Musk's idea of colonising Mars, it occurs to me that there may be a vague queue forming for people to do this. I can't think of anything more terrifying.

I think the Cutlass was undergoing some test. Probably to see if it would fly of a carrier. It had those immediate post WWII jet engines which were notoriously under-powered.

Cheers, Mike.

Good afternoon everyone. :-)

You must have been trying to make it faster using that premium because that engine in 1973 had the compression dropped and was supposed to run on *Regular gas and back then *Regular gas was still pretty good as far as high-octane.

If a pile of gold fell out of the sky into my front yard I would be a collector

As far as American cars my favorites are the *Muscle Cars* and in 1971 was when they started to make all of them have less horsepower and compression since the Gov made them.

They had the rules before that but the car companies would always get around them.

They did that with my Olds 455 in 1970 by saying it was 396HP to pass that rule but it was actually 426HP w/500Ft pounds of torque (which was slightly better than that famous Chrysler 426 Hemi) AND the best part is the pistons I have are called *Flat-Head* so they had all that power but ran on regular gas back then and I still run it on *Regular* but once each summer add a can of the "Octane Booster" to make it 106 octane.

I also like the American coupes from the 30's to the 50's but my garage has no more room and these days I would have to buy a restored one since doing all that work is more than I want to be doing.

I tend to keep things so I still have the 1976 Dodge Power Wagon I got new the summer I was 18yrs old and I have a 1980 Jaguar XJ6 but I replaced the Jag motor with a 1980 GM 350 (4-bolt main) and it already had the GM 350 Transmission......back in 1980 the Jag still has chrome and it is painted bright white so she is a beauty.

They all stay in the garage until summer and never get rained on and the one I drive in the winter and sits outside is the other one in that picture (a platinum color 1999 Chrysler 300M with the biggest engine and all the extras since I got it from the original owner who is a just retired multi-millionaire who had to sell it to have room in his garage for a new Cadillac and he didn't need the money so he sold it to me for the $3000 I had in my pocket that day.

My dream car is still a 1980 Rolls Royce Corniche and as soon as I sell my Jaguar I will have garage space for that

I always hear how the gas price is highest in parts of Cali

Last week I filled all of my cars up when the price dropped to $1.89 but it is already back up to $2.35 again

My wife has a 1998 Honda Accord so that is our fuel efficient driver.

Actually, if you remember back to the 80's, (when I got my driver's license), Regular leaded gas, (not yet abandoned until 1987), had less Octane than it did in the 70's. To get the same Octane that the car was rated for, I had to run Super Unleaded which was at 92 Octane here in North Cali, between 1984 - until Cali changed smog laws and reduced the Octane to 91; don't remember what year that happened. On Regular leaded, and then Unleaded, when I was driving the Cougar, she only got 6 mpg on a 20 Gallon Tank. When running Super, I got 13 mpg, easy. When we had the engine rebuilt in 1986, we had hard valves put in to be able to continue running Super Unleaded. I found no need to run an Octane booster in the Cougar while running Super Unleaded.

The Cougar would do 116 mph, easy, on the Freeway, straight lines, no traffic. Today, I couldn't repeat that trial; too much traffic on any given day. The speedometer went to 120; but, I was told that my Cleveland could get to 135. I found that difficult to believe, since my Cleveland was a stock 2 bbl carb. Had I put in a Holly 750 Vacuum Type 4 bbl Carb., then I could believe getting up to 135. However; putting that 4 bbl carb. in, I'd hate to think what my gas mileage would be.

My one regret is that I never got a chance to go up to the then noted Sears Point Raceway to see what kind of speed she'd get in the quarter mile. ...and, against other amateur drivers.

Back at the top, and WINNING!!!!! :-)

Yeah. About a month ago the retail standard 95 octane dropped about 40% in price, pretty much overnite, and now has rebounded up about 10%. So it's around $1.20 AUD per litre now. I don't drive any further though ....

Cheers, Mike.

I just figured you were driving that back in the 70's

Yeah a track is the only place to race since that is a safe way and rocks won't be flying off the tires.

1980's gasoline went down hill with that 91 octane and adding the fake gasoline to that.

I had a 1966 OLds 442 with a 455 in the 1980's and it wasn't the 1970 version of that engine but I rebuilt it with all the -street-strip parts so with the regular gas back then I always had to add the *Octane booster or it would backfire when I tried to run the quarter-mile

That was the main reason I still have the 1970 because it still runs a Corvette off the road running just 89 octane we have here now.

The way I used to test top speed since the speed-o was always 120mph was I had my friend with his Kawasaki 1000 drive behind me since his speed-o went to 140mph so I can tell when the Cutlass is going 140mph the needle points straight down (also did that with my Power Wagon and it would go 120mph with the 318 with a high-rise and the 4bbl and just installed a new one last summer in fact and the intake is the Weiand X-CELerator )

I know Cali always has those Laws as far as fuels and engines so the only way my cars have been there was for a visit

I am the only owner of the 1976 Power Wagon and back then they made these custom versions with dealer paint jobs and other custom stuff (mine had sidepipes originally) and my engine is original except I changed the heads and intake and it is painted gold with gold cad plated parts.

I can't wait for summer!!

My Jaguar is the opposite with all chrome under the hood
