I have noticed that E@H member akosf is doing quite well these days in the ranking of top computers with a Core 2 Quad. Based on a glance at the measured float speed & measured int speed, his Core 2 Quad does not appear to be very aggessively overclocked. No liquid helium cooling I think.

So I am left to suspect that akos might have found maybe a few more tiny software tricks to increase the E@H throughput on this cpu.

And I wonder when these new tricks might seep down to the GUM (Grest Unwashed Masses) at E@H.

This is already discussed here.

That thread is interesting,

That thread is interesting, OK, but we have all known for a long time that akos is a wizard at hand-tuning of coding, & I still wonder whether & when the very impressive additional speedups he is getting on his Core 2 Quad are likely to filter down to the general E@H user.

The Mac OS X/Intel and (to a somewhat lesser degree) the Linux/Intel power user app 4.21 both already include some optmizations.

Impressive indeed!!! If he lets his speed demon run long enough, he could overtake my dual quad core with his single quad core machine. Let the race begin!!!

And, ya' know. . .

Akos has been awfully quiet on the forums lately. It really does make one wonder what he's up to.

Akos is well known for his modesty and his "no news" is actually quite "amazing news" if you go looking for it :).

Earlier this month (around Dec 9) his machine was taking around 18K seconds to complete a task on each core. Then around Dec 16 - 18 the time had dropped to around 13K seconds. That in itself was quite an impressive speedup but there was more to come. By the end of Dec 22 the crunch time was below 9K seconds. Now there were a couple of minor intervals in there where some client errors occurred but since Dec 22 his machine has continued to power ahead with no sign of errors or validation problems. The current crunch times seem to range between 8.0K and 9.8K with the average certainly below 9.0K

Akos' machine is the fastest C2Q around by a big margin. It's outstripping machines with double the number of cores. It's interesting to have a look at the second ranking C2Q which is currently at #23. It's currently crunching tasks at around 25K - 26K seconds.

Akos' machine is faster by a whopping factor of 3x! I'd be very surprised if the #23 ranked machine wasn't overclocked more as well, which makes it even more impressive :).

Cheers,
Gary.
