Currently my connections to boinc take much longer than they did back around March 1. Is it my windows 10 or has boinc connections slowed down for everybody?

slow speed connecting to boinc

I've been having a bit of trouble the last few days hooking up to Einstein but no problems with Seti so I would say the problem is not Boinc but something with this site.

Merle, you should go look at

Merle, you should go look at the Windows 10 yeah or nay thread on the Seti boards

Windows 10 establishes almost constant linkage to Microsoft.

Bad for people who have a fixed amount of data transfer.

Might be why your connection is so slow

Thanks Zal,
I read about 12 pages of that thread and came up with one possible answer and that was to get rid of the MS Cloud tray icon but it didn't help any. That is a very long article - 64 pages. I'm going blind in my old age. :-)

I should have clarified that my connection is slow only when I START UP Boinc not on a continual basis.

Then it sounds like your pc is doing 'something else' at the same time that it later on stops doing which then makes your connection faster. do you turn off your pc everyday? Did you go thru and turn off all the MS spying stuff, If yes to the first question but no to the 2nd question then it could be MS collecting the data.

Where is the MS spying stuff?

just to clarify for folks, i dont think merle is referring to internet connection, i believe they are referring to the boinc manager establishing the initial connection to the client via localhost on start up.

and yes, i noticed it a few updates ago, it used to take a second or two, now it takes upwards of 5 seconds, this is on windows 8.1 in my case with manager version 7.6.9

it could simply be a delay in the client starting with other processes. but i havent looked in to it since its not really an issue for me since i only reboot once a week (if that)

Yes, thanks; it's the boinc connection. Much slower than last year. Wasn't there some recent change in who and what controls boinc?

Oh sorry about that!!

Yes my Boinc can be VERY slow on startup too, I think it is getting worse instead of better though with each new version. I am using the latest version, 7.6.9, on all my pc's and it does seem really slow.

I also noticed this after upgrading the boinc manager program a while back. Frequently, not always, the manager "hangs" for a few seconds on connecting.

Strangely, it never occurs if I start the manager with the "/n /p " commandline.

I used to check my two crunchers in the closet using the "Advanced - Select computer" menu in the boinc manager and that also "hanged" for a few seconds.
I got tired with using that method and wrote a little monitor program that could launch the boinc manager against my hosts using commandline parameters. Never seen a "hang" using that method.

I use VNC and when I remote in like that they can hang for more than 60 seconds sometimes. I often disconnect and then reconnect and sometimes it is STILL hanging. It does finally connect and continue crunching though. I normally only restart my pc's once a month, after my a/v and spyware checks and just before the backups start.
