NASA livestream for the Jason

NASA livestream for the Jason 3 January 17, 2016 launch is up here as I type. Just a picture of a fuming rocket on the pad as of now.

SpaceX has posted links to two versions of their webcast
Full hosted
rocket and telemetry only
As I type, both of the SpaceX ones show a bit over an hour and a half before they go active.

I think the "full hosted" version will probably give you more control room, and watching throngs cheering and such, if that is your preference.

Lost track of time. Had a power failure and fried some equipment last night. So much for whole house surge protection. Trying to recover extended network were the crunchers are.

Watching now - T+ 22

[EDIT] T+25. Hit drone ship, but too hard.

Another 'hard' landing - a leg broke. No word yet on whether it blew up or anything,

{ I had to turn the sound off rather than listen to the hyper-chicken puppets commentating }

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) Landing : "More great data for the engineers ...." which is an upbeat way of saying you-know-what.

Apparently there is

Apparently there is information out that one landing leg failed to latch down dooming the vehicle regardless of landing softness. Further it has been said the landing was otherwise soft enough.

Brings back thoughts of a previous sticky valve problem.

Hmmmm. There is quite some heat cycling going on with these vehicles.

Cheers, Mike.

Another memorable quotation

Another memorable quotation from Elon.

"At least the pieces are bigger this time".

Ouch. Good job with payload

Ouch. Good job with payload delivery though, landed within 2m of the spot, good kinetics ..... and Elon remains optimistic.

Cheers,

Bearing in mind the severe

Bearing in mind the severe tilt on the first failed landing attempt this rather stately looking picture just before landing (impact?) today is reassuring:

just saw video of the

just saw video of the landing. The comments I had heard earlier in the day seemed to imply a high speed impact with the barge. From this video this is obviously not descriptive of what happened. As noted it appears that a "leg" failed causing it to fall over. If the barge surface is not 90 to the vertical decent then it would be quite possible to bend/break "first leg contact" with an uneven surface. It looked like the horizon of the barge was off "level". I am not sure how you could compensate for this since additional weight is not a solution.
