Chris apparently has a problem with that place

Actually my dear fellow, it's Spain that has a problem with the place not us! After the Spanish Wars of Succession it was ceded to the UK under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 in perpetuity. Unfortunately the Spanish don't understand what perpetuity means, and keep asking for it back. And it doesn't help when the Gibraltarians vote in referendums to stay British. So every so often the Spanish have a sulk, and get stroppy at the border.

Actually they also ceded Minorca to us at the same time but we gave it back to them later.

Suez in 1956 was Nasser of Egypt declaring nationalization of the Suez Canal Company, the joint British-French enterprise which had owned and operated the Suez Canal since its construction in 1869. But the UN and the USA got involved and the tripartite forces of Britain, France and Israel had to withdraw. I remember it well but at that age didn't fully understand the politics of it. Yep, we lost that one!

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

For the record, this particular computer/browser combination's spell checker does not recognize that, with or without the trailing S. But that is not conclusive evidence of anything.

Mine neither. It's kind of frustrating because I got it from the internet *perplex an eyebrow* and as I can't quite remember what search terms I put in to get to it I can't get to it. I put an S on the end of it to make it stop looking like one of those words that has no letters in it... I suspect I'm going to have to clarify that... so for those not tuned in to my wavelength - no duplicated letters in it. I want to say palindrome but I know that's wrong - and anyway you'd think they would have come up with a palindrome to name palindromes as this one just says semordnilap.

And you did! :) Y-e-e-e-s. All I'm going to say is that I see eye to nose with Chris on this one. His eye my nose :)

Well, it only took you a minute to remember, so I guess I'll forgive you.

I also guess I will start a new thread. I wouldn't if this site supported pages, but it doesn't, and I find that scrolling up and down searching out widely scattered vague clues gets rather tiresome (and confusing).

Mike (do we have any other mods here?) can lock this one at his pleasure, or leave it open until residual discussion of things other than the jumble dies off.

If I may respond to Chris S briefly? Firstly, good afternoon good Sir :-)

We vote to be Gibraltarians. :-) Due to some grey areas in the treaty of Utrecht - which may or may not result in succession to Spain should we succeed in removing the label of British Overseas Territory - we vote as we do. For most of us, it is certainly not to remain British. Those that do, include some nutjobs* that want to claim the entirety of the Iberian peninsular for Britain - on even more shaky ground than the Spanish claim to Gibraltar.

This will explain what I mean http://jahtruth.net/britspan.htm :-)

Good morrow my dear Sir,

Good morrow my dear Sir, welcome to the proceedings, pray find a seat and tarry a while.

Ok, perhaps I should have said that the Gibraltarians vote to remain under the Britsh umbrella as an Overseas Territory, rather than pay allegiance to Madrid. But are you suggesting that given half a chance you would remove the current OT classification? Bear in mind also what military installations are inside the rock, no way is the UK giving that up. I know, I have been inside parts of it the the general public don't see.

We are coming over again sometime next year for a long weekend. Last time was a week at Europa Point. I just love the place with British pubs and shops. I would happily retire there but I can't afford to buy a property with the prices at the level they are. As far as I am concerned civilisation stops at the runway. They can keep their ruddy peninsular!

The impression I got is that they would really prefer to be their own masters and not pay allegiance to anyone, but there is some question about whether the treaty would allow that or would forcibly return them to Spain, and under those circumstances they regard Britain as the lesser of two evils. (Mind you, I'm not saying that, it's just my understanding of what he said.)

Oh my - I do hope we have no insulted Spanish einsteinians reading the civilization bit... *perform sudden and very diverting flamenco whilst making racket with castanets* I've never quite got the hang of those things - like tap shoes... their treachery at plonking you on your face or your rear end is not to be taken lightly *sniff* I assure you.

I get quite disappointed when I've gone to the expense of travelling to a foreign clime, to find little Britain there. Perhaps I'm a bit weird though? :)

David S got my gist I think. If we were not a spoil of war and there was no bad blood between Britain and Spain (like there is with Argentina over the Falklands) then who knows how soon we'd dump the OT.

Regarding the installations you mentioned, NATO has fewer objections to such a base being operated by Spain than you might be hoping for :-) and we would not stand in your way if you wished to relocate them elsewhere, but that is the problem is it not? :-) You won't. At least we are more fortunate than Cyprus in that we receive some rent for the land your military lease from us.

Or as Mad Magazine called it, A Crock O BLIP Now. (The BLIP was ostensibly blocking out the word that often comes at the end of the phrase "crock o" but which they couldn't print and which I can't say here (and I don't mean beans).)
