Night Bill - though you may already be up again :)

Good Morning Annie ! or afternoon in the UK )

How was the Ballet ?

Bill

It was SO good!! :) Loved every minute of it - the choreography did such a good job of telling the story I don't think it would have mattered if you weren't familiar with it. And we got "snowed" on at the end too :)

edit: to make that bit *point down at THAT bit* ...smaller... so that people can skip it and not get bored :)

I was offered a scholarship to Sadlers Wells (they're the ones doing Edward Scissorhands btw) when I was sixteen but I couldn't take it up :( lived on the wrong continent to easily commute :) Got a bit disheartened and gave up doing it altogether... which was REALLY stupid.

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

@David - ooh - painful - I didn't break anything except lots and lots and lots of skin :) Trouble with shorts and tee-shirts - not much protection :/

@Mikey - well... I will refer you back to this:

Quote:

I will declare the thread won :)

Now all you have to do is work out who won it and what with :) and the first person to get that right can decide between themself and the person who won, who won it. Happy now!? :)

So far David has guessed TL and was wrong :)

If you would like a clue :) then scroll to a timelord (or a swim) and a mouse will take you there :)

Clicking on the picture of Tom B. leads back to tbret's post in which he mentions Fritz Zwicky, Antony Hewish, and Samuel Okoye.

Clicking on the picture of the elephants after the word swim leads to the same post. tbret mentions that Hewish won a Nobel.

I'm starting to think I'd rather be tortured by the CIA than wait for this thread to end.

You have three names... which do you think might fit? :) Bearing in mind EVERYTHING that went before it... :)

I was originally thinking Hewish because he got the Nobel for physics, but he was an astronomer by trade. So then I thought Okoye because he was actually an astrophycist and also from Africa, where there are elephants. But then I read a bit of the the Wikipedia article about Hewish and found that he was actually a radio astronomer, giving a hint of a Seti tie in. And then I read the article about Okoye; he also worked, and had a doctorate, in radio astronomy.

So I'm eliminating Zwicky from the list.

I think I'll go with Okoye because of the elephants.

My official solution is "tbret in the Okoye Room with the elephant tusk*." What say you to that, Inspector Annie?

*Pre-regulation ivory, documented to have been taken after the animal's natural death.

:))))))) I say to that that YOU are correct David! Well done!!! :)

Born on the date Mike worked out for us (26 July 1939) Died on 18 November 2009 - the date (though not the year because I would have had to borrow your tardis to do that) that I posted about a "demise today" when I mentioned leaving my leg in a train :)

Member of the Pugwash Conferences (founded on the principles of the Russell-Einstein Manifesto - signed by Einstein just days before he died)- asking us all to "remember our humanity" and rid the world of all nuclear weapons.

Born in Nigeria (remember the flag and the "railway tracks" and the near perfect lateral to the Panama canal? :)) - the same birthplace as the author of "Things fall apart" (Chinua Achebe) and one of the few places where the Harmattan wind blows and where quarantine (due to ebola) became an issue for some? Yes... you needed a LOT of joined up thinking I think :) and the dung beetle I posted whose name I can't remember now :/

Overlooked for the Nobel prize in 1974 (although Hewish did at least mention him in his acceptance speech - a courtesy he did not afford Jocelyn Bell - hence why that prize was nicknamed the "no bell prize")

Samuel Okoye

...found the first neutron star in 1965... "the hotspot in the crab nebular". Here... have a twinkly star everyone! :) - from there Jocelyn ran with it and came up with the pulsar... both were students of Hewish.

So... finally we have... uh-oh... from having no winner we now have two... *gulp* ... tbret and David.

Now tbret did say he was having a spell of the anti-socials enforced upon him... so that MIGHT make things easier... and my invitation to him to elaborate on his answer at the time elicited not a lot so was probably due to the anti-socials having already happened or that he'd given up reading the thread like many I think wish they had :))) otherwise we're going to need to settle who gets to run the next thread... sorry everyone - at this point I'm not taking sides :)

edit: but I have had tremendous fun running this one :))))))))))))))) Thank you for putting up with me :)

of course... if you'd picked up on the Africa reference and popped that and physicist into a search engine or two at the beginning - it would have taken you straight to him :) It was my biggest loose straggly... upon which a tug would have made for a VERY short thread indeed :))))))))))

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

Phew ! This was a fun run ? Well that explains alot. Not a marathon after all. :-):-)

Please do linger though. I think many have ... err .... adjusted to your ... ummm ... special mental approach to ... oh, what's the word .... stuff ?? :-)

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Right now I'm feeling just a wee bit of bodily discomfort, so I won't make any claims on the next thread at least until morning.

Still, I am GREATLY relieved to have the end of this thread in sight.

It is a target rich environment ! Alex The Great began with much the same idea, allegedly wept when he was told there was no more. Just remember that when E@H is laid waste from your administrations. Can you see yourself in the mold of Boadicea perhaps ? I bloody well can ! :-) :-)

Screaming War Cry With Some Stabby-Stabby, Mike.

( edit ) For the record I do not watch the Game Of Let's Kill All The Main Characters show.
