Hello!

I'm trying to download another workload, but BIONIC is coming back with the error that the 'opengl32.dll' cannot be found or is corrupted. (I've done a search on my PC, and the file is apparently there in my Windows directory.)

When I try launching the "einstein_4.79_windows_intelx86" file, I get an error message saying:

"This application has failed to start because OPENGL32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I've tried using BIONIC's repair function, but that hasn't helped either.

Any help would be very appreciated!

Thanks!

Nick,

I suspect that your have run into a variation of the Einstein 4.79 "graphics bug". (i.e. OpenGL is the graphics language Einstein uses for it's screensaver.) Although, I must admit that I have not seen this particular error message before. Since you have been successfully processing Einstein for some time, I am curious to know if you can correlate this new error message with any recent changes you might have made on your computer (e.g new programs installed, Windows Updates installed, etc.)?

As you may have read, there are numerous posts on these boards relating to "screensaver problems" or "client error problems" that turn out to be caused by this "graphics bug". The advice we always give is to make sure the driver for your graphics card is up to date (see this thread) and to try the Beta application. Or stop using the screensaver and "Show graphics" option.

Stick

EDIT: I am definitely NOT a programmer so I am just guessing here. But, I don't think the opengl32.dll file is installed by BOINC or Einstein. My guess is it is either installed with your graphics driver or it is installed as part of Windows (and BOINC/Einstein must link to it in order to run). In other words, I think the repair you need might come from either updating your graphics driver or via a Windows repair.

Thanks, Stick. I was just on

Thanks, Stick. I was just on a futile search of the Wiki for the errorcode on his WUs. Hope the beta install does the job, because ....
If the opengl.dll file is really corrupted, we're going to have to walk him through a Windows repair, or email him an uncorrupted file to replace his. Potential pitfalls, either way.

I'm going back to the Boinc board for a few. Someone there has a Boinc folder that's 19.4GB!!!

(edit) INFO: file opengl32.dll (located in Windows/system32 folder) should show as 697KB, if he hovers the cursor over it.

Hi Nick, All your results

Hi Nick,

All your results since Dec 15 show an error - 0xC0000135. Did you make any changes to your PC around then? Install new software or update existing software? Change your security settings or firewall/AntiVirus software?

The only references I found to the 0xC0000135's are associated with .net, and BOINC/Einstein aren't .net application.

In this case theres no need to reinstall BOINC, that message is generic in that the same message pops up anytime Windows can't find DLL's. The message assumes that its the DLL it didn't find was part of the application, so reinstalling the application will reinstall the "missing" DLL. But in this case opengl32.dll is a basic part of Windows XP, so reinstalling BOINC won't fix that.

[EDIT]

The Einstein application isn't even starting, so its hard to see where the graphics bug comes into play.

But - if the first workunit corrupted the Windows OpenGL drivers, then rebooting would fix that. Nick, have you rebooted since the 15th? If not, try rebooting and see if works better.

Hi Stick! Thanks for your help!

Other than the usual Windows & virus patches, the only programs I've installed recently were a couple of applications for enhancing pictures (colour correction, removing red eyes... et cetera.) None of the programs met my needs so I removed them within about 30 minutes. However, the issue with Einstein dates back to last Monday - i.e. before I fooled around with those programs.

In addition, I don't think I've been able to view the screensaver for more than a month now. The program (until this week) was working pretty well - except that I haven't been able to get the Einstein screensaver working for over a month now.

Hmmmm... I haven't touched my security settings in some time (excluding for virus updates & automaticaly downloaded Windows patches.)

My Windows did have some sort of crash this past week. I had to reboot and Windows went through a 5 step process to fix possible issues. Now that I think about it, I believe it reported & removed 2 corrupt files - but I am not certain if either was "OPENGL32.dll".

Hi, Nick,

Have you tried restarting Windows since Walt made this suggestion? Is Boinc/Einstein working properly now, or are you still getting that error?

Regards,

Michael

I think I've tried it all.

Message 21918 in response to message 21917

I think I've tried it all.

-Rebooting (both cold & restarting)...
-Removing & reinstalling my graphics drivers & related programs...
-Removing & reinstalling BIONIC in case some file is corrupted...
-Copying the file to my BIONIC folder (in case the program is incorrectly looking in the Windows directory...
-Pleading on my hands & knees with my PC to run BIONIC properly again...

But still no luck.

The only thing I believe I haven't done is find a friend who can email me a copy of the "opengl..." file.

Can you find it on your Windows installation CD?

It's probably in there, but I wasn't able to find it on either my XP or Win98 CD's... but thankfully, it's a moot point now. BIONIC appears to be running properly again. That "opegl..." file was in in the Service Pack 2 folder on my HD. Just for the hell of it, I copied it into my Windows/System32 folder. It may be purely coincidental, but not long after I made the change things seemed to begin behaving. i.e. uploading/downloading work units are now fine & the screensaver for Einstien came back to life yesterday.

Thanks for the help everyone!
