They are just a way to measure how much work you have done based upon time worked and the speed of your computer(s). Many folks enjoy a little competition, both between individuals and teams. The credits are just a measure of what they have contributed to the project. They serve no other purpose, then "personal satisfaction" and "bragging rights". I crunch for the science but also enjoy the competition which makes it fun. They also help me to monitor my computers performance over the long term.
