There is a guy from NASA hunting for lost lunar rocks. They were brought down to Earth at a huge cost and then forgotten on shelves. The whole Apollo program was just a political affair, and, as Neil Armstrong said, it ended the cold war.

Nasa has been taking a 'been there done that' approach in the past, but more recently has been thinking that the Moon is MUCH closer then Mars, for instance. And they are NOW thinking it could be an easier task to use the Moon as a test bed for future missions elsewhere. Other Countries ARE making plans to send people to the Moon, but no serious plans are so far along as to not be cancelled at a moments notice. Sending a mission to the Moon with the stuff needed for a Mars trip is not such a big change and could provide 'proof of concept' for an eventual Mars Mission. The Moon rocks proved that the Moon has the same basic geology as the Earth, and in fact could be the result of a HUGE impact with another celestial body millions of years ago. That means that mining the Moon is probably not going to be worth it in the near future, and the Scientists are probably not too interested in it geologically anymore. Money for a Lunar Project must come from someplace and Scientific Research is a major funding source!
Now that is not much of a restart but it may get some projects started since we should started bulding something there back in the 1980's and 90's instead of doing nothing other than the orbiting house just over 200 miles up above us (ISS)
Imagine something like that on the Moon started 30 years ago.
