Some might say we are yes! We

Some might say we are yes! We all know the biblical story of Babel, and why everyone ended up speaking a different language. Some countries today are very much multi cultural, and some like the UK have strong regional accents, but all for different reasons of course. 2 million people speak Esperanto but it is not yet a universal language all over the world, the way that English is becoming.

Quote:
Esperanto is seen by many of its speakers as an alternative or addition to the growing use of English throughout the world, offering a language that is easier to learn than English.

Not always racial, but often Regional. Ever tried to understand a Glaswegian?

So where is Glaswegia ? Is that part of Norwegia/Swedewegia/Finnwegia ? :-)

Seems remote like Oodnadatta which, as the Wiki entry indicates, is defined by being surrounded by cattle, having record high temperatures of 50+ C and a burgeoning population of 277. I expect they would have their own dialect, as only needing to be understood by each other.

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

What goes on in

What goes on in Melbourne?

Somewhat related to this, does anyone remember the old internet service called Usenet or newsgroups? It was adopted by Google as their Groups, which is useful to those of us who occasionally need to look up something we wrote in a group many years ago.

In this case, some 18 1/2 years ago in the group alt.fan.dave_barry, we were taking turns insulting countries with poems. My contribution was:

  • An Awful Ode to Burundi

The African nation Burundi
Was visited by the shoe man Al Bundi(sp?).
He came to despair;
They'd never heard of him there.
Said he, "Sic transit gloria mundi."

Hmm, not an ode, is it? Also not very insulting. IMO, it actually
speaks well of them if they've never heard of Al. Oh well, I tried.

If you really want to see what other nonsense we got up to back then, this link will take you directly to my poem above, but you should scroll to the top of the page and read it all the way down. It does not matter that you will have no idea who any of these people are. I don't even remember most of them anymore. (As I read it, I got at least half a dozen "Oh yeah! I wonder what ever happened to him/her..."s.)

No they didn't adopt, they just provided a web interface and put tons an tons of spam on the small fraction of groups they carried. At one point they had gotten the deja news archive, but managed to lose it or a lot of it.

Best not say more about Alphabet.

However if you want utterly uncensored communications there are still several providers.

Yes of course I remember

Yes of course I remember Usenet and the .alt groups. I never went there, they looked like a bunch of weird saddos to me. There are modern places where they congregate now, and I'll let you guess where.

Having said that, that place seems to have lost the plot this weekend so I'll try for something a little more upmarket here.
